Curriculum

Learning is not linear, neat, structured, and organized. It is messy and filled with trial and error. Through this experimentation, children are led through their journey that gives them the opportunity, support, and space to find their identity as students, citizens, and people. Along a parallel path, teachers are developing professionally and personally as well. Together, they model what it is to be a curious problem solver and leader.

Divisions

The Early Childhood Program is focused on establishing children’s independence. Learning is wholly experiential, sensory-based, and highly individualized. Student progress and assessments are observation based, requiring an expert level of understanding of early childhood development by our teachers. Checklists and milestones based on research and experience are used as informative guidelines to encourage and support learning. In Early Childhood, socialization is the vehicle for exploring the world.

When students start Lower School, the focus is shifted from their individual needs to collaboration and building community. Learning is discovery. Group work and projects are developmentally appropriate and help children learn their strengths as learners. At this age, they are ready to appreciate the existence and value of varying perspectives and approaches to problem solving. In Lower School, students use their foundations in reading, vocabulary, math, and the scientific process to apply what they have learned independently and expand their understanding of the world.

When students arrive in the Middle School, they combine learning the skills and concepts from their classes with the complexity of thought they have gained from their global perspectives. They have spent years developing and applying leadership skills in various settings. Learning is processing and layering the information in front of them with their own interpretation and creativity. Through project-based learning and student-led inquiry, students learn how to take ownership of their studies and apply critical thinking skills to synthesize knowledge. Learning is interactive, creative, and dynamic.
