When students start in our Lower School, the focus is shifted from their individual needs to collaboration and building community.
For our students in Kindergarten through 4th grade, learning is all about discovery. Group work and projects are developmentally appropriate and help children learn their strengths as learners. At this age, they are ready to appreciate the existence and value of varying perspectives and approaches to problem-solving.
In the Lower School, students use their foundations in reading, vocabulary, math, and the scientific process to apply what they have learned independently and expand their understanding of the world.
This project is an opportunity for students to explore about careers that might be of their interest in the future.
Students will first select a career that interests them. They will then conduct research on that career in preparation to field questions from their teachers and peers about it. Additionally, they will create a poster reflecting what they’ve learned to showcase alongside them as they dress up for their selected profession.
To commemorate the 100th day of school, our Kindergarteners dress as if they are 100 years old. They also make a poster with 100 items of their choice to share with their classmates.
Our 1st graders celebrate all the words they can now read! Students collect 100 words that they can read and assemble their collection into a shape or picture onto a poster. They also bring 100 pieces of cereal and commemorate the day by enjoying breakfast all together.
Students in 3rd and 4th grades engage in a project where they’re asked to invent something that would help enhance their community.
This introduces them to problem-identification, problem-solving and creativity skills. It builds confidence in invention, innovation, entrepreneurship and public speaking skills.
